چکیده

A sample of selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) was observed in 2003 and 2004 with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS), an array of imaging atmospheric-Cherenkov telescopes in Namibia. The redshifts of these candidate very-highenergy (VHE, >100 GeV) γ-ray emitters range from z = 0.00183 to z = 0.333. Significant detections were already reported for some of these objects, such as PKS 2155−304 and Markarian 421. Marginal evidence (3.1σ) for a signal is found from large-zenith-angle observations of Markarian 501, corresponding to an integral flux of I(>1.65 TeV)= (1.5±0.6stat±0.3syst) × 10−12 cm−2 s−1 or ∼15% of the Crab Nebula flux. Integral flux upper limits for 19 other AGN, based on exposures of ∼1 to ∼8 h live time, and with average energy thresholds between 160 GeV and 610 GeV, range from 0.4% to 5.1% of the Crab Nebula flux. All the upper limits are the most constraining ever reported for these objects.

XMM-Newton observations of bright ROSAT selected active galactic nuclei with low intrinsic absorption

We present a sample of twenty-one ROSAT bright active galactic nuclei (AGN), representing a range of spectral classes, and selected for follow-up snap-shot observations with XMMNewton. The typical exposure was between 5 − 10ks. The objects were primarily selected on the bases of X-ray brightness and not on hardness ratio; thus the sample cannot be strictly defined as a “soft” sample. One of the...

Gamma-ray emission associated with Cluster-scale AGN Outbursts

Recent observations have revealed the existence of enormously energetic ∼ 10 erg AGN outbursts in three relatively distant galaxy clusters. These outbursts have produced bubbles in the intra-cluster medium, apparently supported by pressure from relativistic particles and/or magnetic fields. Here we argue that if >GeV particles are responsible then these particles are very likely protons and nuc...

AGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies

We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...

AGN Observations in the GeV / TeV Energy Range with the MAGIC

MAGIC currently is the largest imaging atmospheric Cerenkov telescope world-wide. Since 2004, γ-ray emission from several active galactic nuclei in the GeV/TeV energy range has been detected, some of which were newly discovered as very-high energy γ-ray sources. The γ-rays are assumed to originate from particle acceleration processes in the AGN jets. We give an overview of the AGN observed and ...

Identifying the subtle signatures of feedback from distant AGN using ALMA observations and the EAGLE hydrodynamical simulations

We present sensitive 870 μm continuum measurements from our ALMA programmes of 114 X-ray selected AGN in the CDF-S and COSMOS fields. We use these observations in combination with data from Spitzer and Herschel to construct a sample of 86 X-ray selected AGN, 63 with ALMA constraints at z = 1.5 − 3.2 with stellar mass > 2×10 M⊙. We constructed broad-band spectral energy distributions in the infr...
